5 Tools to Survive Winter in Prescott (especially if you are from Mexico)

The last month was one of the coldest months in Prescott. The place I came from is nothing like Prescott. I’m from Mexico – warm weather and beaches. The weather back in my town is never lower than 50 F. Now you can imagine how hard and rough winter has been for me! (Don’t laugh)

I did research about the human body’s spots that lose the heat fastest. I found out that those spots are: hands, head, toes, and the neck. Based on that, the following 5 items are the basic winter equipment everyone should have to survive in Prescott.

1. Waterproof jacket — There are times when Prescott becomes a massive waterfall. A waterproof jacket is necessary.

2. Waterproof boots — Prescott is not known for having a lot of snow but sometimes it dumps (like this year). Waterproof boots will help you to keep your toes dry and warm. I can say that I really needed them!

3. Gloves — Cold hands are not funny, they hurt and the feeling of not feeling them is awful. Get good gloves. They are essential.carlos gloves

4. Warm hat — The research shows that the head is the spot that loses heat fastest. A good hat is very important.

5. Car cover (if you don’t have a garage) — Even with a waterproof jacket, waterproof boots, gloves and a warm hat, you still won’t want to get up early to scrape your car. Get a car cover.

With this basic winter equipment you will survive.

As you can see potential students, it is definitely a University where you will need a decent winter coat. We recommend decent because as most students have stated, it only gets cold enough for you to enjoy the winter weather not cold enough to freeze off those fingers and toes. For those people who haven’t seen snow before this may be the place for you! As part of the college experience you should embrace new places and experiences, seeing the snow for the first time is the perfect way to start off! The majority of the freshman class is fascinated by the beauty of snow and frost every November and hopefully someday soon that will be you!

Get that application in and start looking for a coat! We would love to welcome you to our campus and hopefully tempt you into a snowball fight some day soon! If you are fan of frosty weather stop by and visit us today! We give super fun tours starting at the Welcome Center 🙂

The Winter Weather Man

Hello readers, if you aren’t currently an Embry-Riddle student then you might be wondering what the weather is like out here in Prescott, AZ. Well lucky for you I will be getting into how the weather is and how it changes mostly in respect to winter. This will be especially helpful for those coming from warm climates like myself.

So ERAU in Prescott definitely gets FOUR seasons! Summer is hot, fall is bipolar, winter is cold and spring is a usually a good mix of warm and cold weather. But you must be wondering how cold it actually gets here… Well last week it reached 37 degrees (F) during the day! That’s crazy!…..I don’t want to scare you so ill lighten it up with some good news, such as this weeks weather. The average for the week turned out to be 56 degrees (F) midday, and 34 degrees at any given time after dark.

So be prepared for the winter! while it is only this cold during the winter it does lighten up in the fall and spring, which are quite pleasant and beautiful. Being able to come out here and experience four seasons its great, there is really nothing like Prescott. For instance below is a photograph taken of Watson Lake after its snowed, which is right around the corner from ERAU. In fact most students that run, tend to run to the lake and back which takes about 30 minutes to get there, its a great trail!

But enough about how cold it gets, the real question is, does it snow at Embry-Riddle and how often? Well for the past 3 years that I have gone to ERAU in Prescott it has snowed on average 10 to 15 days each year. And i would say about three of those days does it actually come down in a storm that makes it hard to drive. So if you drive you could get away without buying chains no problem but I have some anyway. The other thing to know about snow here is that is melts very fast rarely staying on the roads for more than half a day. As soon as the bright Arizona sun hits it, it’s gone. I hope you enjoyed this blog, stay tuned for more!

Surviving Prescott Winter Weather

Hey there, Its me again, and as you might have guessed I have spent a lot of time at Embry-Riddle and in the Prescott area. Well, unfortunately the rumors about our crazy weather are true, monsoons in the summer and sub-freezing snowy streaks in the winter. I can assure you however, that the peculiarities of this gorgeous place can easily be overcome by anyone who makes the decision to spend their next four years here. The four important things to remember are as follows: layers, vitamin c, boots, and brains. I’ll discuss each of these critical needs to survive the weather here, and also one additional thing that you’ll need: A sense of adventure and a youthful disposition towards the snow!

Layers-YOU WILL NEED THESE! The wonderful thing about layers is that you can wear as many layers of clothing as you want in order to stay warm. You don’t have to go and buy yourself a parka when it hits 19 degrees, just throw on an extra shirt and sweater, grab some gloves and head out. If you are in class and you get too warm later just take a sweater off, no big deal!

Vitamin C- This will keep your immune system up so if you get a little too chilled one day you wont get sick. Getting sick and missing classes is a huge cause of extra stress and low grades in college, avoid it at all costs!! Also, pick up some multi vitamins, these will help maintain your natural balance of minerals and also prevent you from becoming ill. We want you to succeed and the student’s health is our main priority, so if you can’t afford to be these at Walmart, or just don’t have the time to, come on by the Wellness Center at Haas . We provide the medical care you need all week long!!

Boots- You WILL WANT THESE SUMMER AND WINTER!! The monsoons in the summer turn center campus into a giant flowing creek, but don’t worry, the campus is specifically designed to keep the creek out of your path but, we can’t prevent some of the deep puddles that form on the walkways. For this reason I urge you to go buy some rubber ducky boots, you know the kind i mean, they look like your grandmas gardening shoes but they are exceptionally comfortable and dry. Most of the summer students wear these several times a week as it is necessary. On the other hand, for winter you will want a good pair of water proof high top hiking boots. These will keep your feet dry if it rains or snows;  they are also quite comfortable as they provide ankle support and traction so that you won’t slip on the ice that forms on stairs and walkways after a big snow. The safety department does their best to keep ice under control but, nature has other plans so please be prepared so you don’t encounter any dangerously slippery situations.

Brains- Please use this, if you attend Embry-Riddle you are obviously pretty smart, so again I ask please use your intelligence!! Observe your surroundings, if a passage way is to icy find a safer path and avoid it. Follow the guidelines for usage of icy pathways and stairs, most stairs and icy areas are marked off by cones to indicate that you must use caution while walking there. Places that are too dangerous will be completely roped off in yellow “DO NOT CROSS” tape. Some campus roads may be closed off because of black ice so please observe this and use caution when traveling anywhere on campus or in Prescott by car or foot. We want you to stay safe!!

The final element that is necessary is a sense of fun, have fun with the weather but, remember to be safe!!!!!
