One Month Left of the Fall Semester…

It is simply amazing how quickly the semester flies by. It seems like yesterday I was finally getting used to my course schedule! For our current Freshmen I’m sure this is an exciting time because next semester you won’t be the newest people on the block and you will get to go see your families over break.

However, this exciting time of year is also a very tiring time of year as classes are starting to wrap up. It is very tempting to just roll over and go back to sleep or even skip one assignment. This isn’t the best decision though, there is still some time left to make or break those grades so keep it together!

As a four year “veteran” of Embry-Riddle Prescott’s Fall semester I highly encourage you to take a small break from reality on the weekends but continue working hard. The end of the semester is like the last mile in a 12 mile hike — you are tired and you want to sleep but you are almost to the top of the mountain. You can’t give up yet!!!

For our students who we will be meeting next Fall, the same applies to you!! I know there is this whole Senioritis thing that is “tradition” in high school but do not allow that “tradition” to keep you from graduating. Without that diploma we here at Embry-Riddle won’t be able to support you as you make it through your years in college and shoot for that dream job.

You are almost there, one semester down and a few more to go!!

Campus is Growing!

Our Beautiful Campus

I am sure our prospective students are wondering what we are doing to prepare for their eventual arrival so today I am going to introduce you to our growing campus!

We are currently building new dorms on our campus that when completed will be super modern and filled with all the best stuff for students to use! It has been really exciting to watch them go up on the far side of campus. They are going to be amazing!!

In addition to the new dorms we are gearing up to build Academic Complex 2 which will be an amazing new facility for the STEM degree programs at our University. The building will include physics laboratories, Biology classrooms, multiple computer laboratories, and work rooms for student innovation. It will also include a planetarium! Although, this building may not be finished by the time I graduate it will be an awesome resource for incoming students. I can only hope to visit and tour it some day!

In other news the remodel to our small gym was also a success and the athletics facilities for student athletes has tripled in size. So if you are a student athlete interested in Embry-Riddle that’s a benefit that you can enjoy right now!

OctoberWest Success!

This year’s October West celebration was a success yet again! There were tons of cool events planned and neat people to meet, I wish there had more time to do it all! Some of our awesome events were the job fair, shopping cart parade, Friday Fair, Wings Out West Air show, and the parachute hunt! That isn’t even the full list, it’s only the ones that I was able to participate in!!

October West is a great time to come visit the University and become immersed in our diverse, fun, and intelligent community. For current students it also the perfect time to make connections in the Industry as the job fair attracts companies looking to hire our students after graduation. The majority of these companies are also looking for interns so, even first year students have the opportunity to get employment experience that will help them when they start looking for jobs.

Fall 2015. Senior Year. Capstone. Yes!

Hey there fellow students/potential students here’s an update on how my first month back has been! So, as you know, I am a senior in Aerospace Engineering and this semester I am working on the Preliminary Aircraft Design course of my Capstone Project. It has been pretty fun so far but is definitely hard. The courses you take prior to the capstone do help out a lot in your preparation for designing an entire aircraft from scratch. But really how cool is that — an entire aircraft from scratch!

I am also continuing to pursue the research I was working on over the summer. Hopefully, the data processing will allow us to write a paper on the research. If we are able to write it then I am hoping that the project will help me in my professional career in the Air Force.

Yes, I am in ROTC here and it rocks!! I am in my fourth year and I have the position of female cadet retention in the detachment. It is super fun because I get to meet cool female cadets, encourage, advise, and PT with them!

Student Employment Opportunities

There are a lot of student jobs available on campus! Being a student employee has its perks such as tons of hours each week, the occasional free lunch, and meeting some interesting people. Additionally, according to student employees I talked to, on-campus jobs are better than off-campus jobs because when you are not busy you can do homework. A few student employees mentioned that having a campus job has taught them how to perform in a professional atmosphere as most campus jobs are office oriented unlike the typical labor-based off-campus position.

Once you arrive on campus you are eligible for one of these jobs. First semester freshman are hired but the campus staff sometimes prefer to hire second semester freshman as they have had a chance to adjust to life in college and are more likely to be able to balance their schedule in their second semester.

A wide range of jobs are open to students. You can be a tutor, grader, IT employee, grounds keeper, lab monitor, lab assistant, tour guide, office filer, summer camp leader, orientation leader, pool employee, and the list goes on! You could even be a student blogger like I am! So if you are interested in getting a job to augment your monthly income get your resume ready and apply today! Half Way Through Summer Courses!

Here is a quick update for all of our incoming freshman!! We are halfway through the first set of summer courses so if you haven’t registered for the courses you will be taking in the fall now is the time to get on it!!!

If you have been putting it off, that’s okay, it seems intimidating but, the process is really very simple. All returning students actually register online but, for our freshman we highly recommend giving us a call in the Admissions department so we can get you connected with a counselor and/or an academic adviser who can walk you through the process 🙂

So get started today!!! We look forward to seeing you on campus in the fall and the faster you get registered the easier your first days with us will be!!

AFROTC Commissioning

The Air Force ROTC Det 028 commissioned 21 brand new 2nd Lt.s this afternoon! It was a very exciting ceremony that showed once more how excellent the detachment here at Embry-Riddle in Prescott, AZ is. Two distinguished graduates were named at the event and awarded as their proud families stood by. As a cadet here at Embry-Riddle commissioning is one of the most important events in your career, it is the day that you become an officer. After 4 to 5 years of long, hard work, you have achieved the end goal. For this reason it is very inspiring for cadets who are not yet at the point of graduation to attend as well. Watching a commissioning is motivating as you get to see your friends enter a new and exciting stage in their careers.

If you are a cadet here or at another University I strongly encourage you to attend a commissioning ceremony. For those of our potential students who may be reading this, when you are thinking about your future do not loose sight of the end goal. Ensure that you choose a University that has a reputation for excellence in your chosen field. If it is AFROTC and engineering that you decide on then Embry-Riddle’s Prescott campus is the place to be! We look forward to seeing you here in the future. 🙂

How to Eat Healthy on a College Budget

If you are like most college students or you are soon to be one of us broke, sleep deprived individuals then here is some information that you might want to know!

This past year, after I came back from Field Training, I committed to eating as healthfully as I could. Something my FTO said to me at FT really stuck and ever since I haven’t been able to eat candy without feeling guilty. So, I turned my health habits around. At first I thought it was going to be super hard to cook with raw veggies, grains, and meats. However, it was just the opposite, I got rid of bread, sugar, processed foods, and most of my processed drinks.

After that I headed to the grocery store and discovered that instead of spending $60 for two weeks of groceries (all processed foods) I could now spend $20!! I bought all fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, and grains. I made an effort to plan out balanced meals for each week and surprisingly I did not have to take another trip to the grocery store!

Since making the switch (I do fall back into my old food habits on occasion) I have felt so much better, had more energy, and I’ve been sleeping better. Not only that but, I am not as broke as I used to be!!! Turns out that eating healthy is better for you and your wallet!!

Semester Finale

This is the last week of the semester and it has been crazy! Last homework assignments are due, projects are due, and presentations are due too! Thankfully, we have all been keeping our heads above the water and getting everything done.

I am looking forward to the close of the semester! To stay motivated it helps to think about what I have planned for the summer months.

I will be making money and hanging out. I plan on doing tons of crafts, going hiking, working out, and learning how to make healthy meals on a budget 🙂 What are your plans for summer??

Tutoring During Finals

Need help during Finals week? Tutoring is still available by appointment! Check out the control tower for your tutor’s contact information and schedule a study session. When you check control tower for the list of tutors, feel free to contact more than one that way you have more scheduling options.

If no one is available then contact a professor. They are always more than willing to help out in finals prep. They are paid to help you learn and they are often better sources of information for those tough questions.

Good luck studying for finals everyone, we are almost done!!! Finish it up strong!!!
