My dish is called Caprese, it is pretty simple to make. All you need is mozzarella cheese, Roma tomatoes, basil leaves, balsamic vinegar, and an olive oil of your choosing. It was quite a success as my table ran out in just 30 minutes!!!

There were so many tables full of great food from all over the world. The tables I tried were Germany, Italy (of course), Lebanon, Mexico, Poland, Iran, America, and so many others!! All the food was amazing and I definitely learned a lot about some of my fellow students. So, if you enjoy good food, cultural experiences, and awesome people then Embry Riddle is the place for you! We celebrate our different nationalities in the coolest way possible and we welcome you to join us next year 🙂 For more information click on the links below, Thanks for reading!!

Window Plants Anyone?

So I was recently asked, what the best window plant to have in a college dorm is. In all honesty, I think it has to be something pretty and low maintenance. For example, some good plants would be..

a cactus- It is possible to get a non prickly version. These don’t have to be watered often and love the sun, definitely a good plant for a college kid.

an orchid- Perfect for someone who likes flowers, they are low maintenance, need bright but indirect sunlight, and only need water every few days.

an aloe vera plant- Fun fact, the sap of the aloe vera plant is good for burns. So if you are just learning how to cook, this window plant might be a perfect choice for you. Care is similar to that of an orchid.

a bonsai tree- These are tiny little trees that need indirect sun light and a small amount of water every two or three days. They are easy to care for and really cute!

or a bamboo- Probably needs the most water out of all the plants listed above, it is best to keep the roots soaked at least 75% of the time. The one downside to bamboo is that it can get really really big!!

Hope that helps narrow down the decision!! Additionally, in the Embry Riddle Prescott dorms, plants are more than welcome 🙂

Copy Center

Awesome Picture of our Cessnas!

Another quick note on how to save $$$$ in college is to utilize the campus copy center!! At Embry Riddle Prescott out copy center is one of the best and here is how it can help you!!

1. If you buy a PDF book for a lot cheaper than a bound copy, you can print it (for free) in the library and take it to the copy center to be bound for about 3 bucks. This saves you on average about $100+ a semester!

2. Laminating formula sheets is an awesome way to ensure that you will never loose your formulas. I did this for Calculus freshman year and I am still using my laminated formula sheet in MA 441, which is a graduate level course in Mathematical Methods for Engineering. So for a dollar I have a lot of use on that sheet.

3. Faxes can be sent through the copy center, this is a resource that many people do not take advantage of, it is a lot cheaper than any place in town!

4. And last but not least, You can have your notes bound by the copy center which will help you with studying come finals week.

Sooooooo USE YOUR RESOURCES 🙂 If you have any questions of comments please let us know, if you are interested in reading more about Embry Riddle’s Campus Services click here.

Pets in the Dorms

So today I would like to address a very common question: What kind of pets are we allowed to have in the dorms at Embry Riddle? Well……only fish. The official rules say that whatever it is it still must fit in a five gallon tank. Please don’t be funny and try to trap some poor cat in a five gallon tank, that’s animal abuse….try to stick with a fish or fishes. You can have as many fish as you want, with in reason of course as long as they can all be contained in a single 5 gallon tank.

Personally, I have had a betta fish since freshman year. They are pretty, easy to take care of, and actually enjoy your company if placed on your desk while you work. My fish even chases laser pointers…..which I should probably be more concerned about than amused. However, if you really want a fuzzy pet you can try and work out something with housing and residence life, no guarantees but, you might be able to keep a hamster or something.

The funniest things I have seen/heard of as far as pets living in the dorms go is that over summer someone had a Labrador in their room that was never discovered. I know of at least three cats that have lived in the hall closet of the upper class-man apartments…poor kitties. The weirdest one I have seen is a 6 inch fish that bites people, so please don;t get one that big. Also, be considerate to animals. I know that some people just rally want a pet but, think about what you are putting them through if you have to hide them all the time..

Don't do this to a cat

Overall, stick with a fish, they like small spaces and you won’t have to hide them from anyone, unless they bite…

Air Force ROTC

Hello again, I thought it might be time to give y’all an update on what I’ve been up to in Air Force ROTC at Embry Riddle Prescott. I am a second semester sophomore, which means that I am going through Field Training Preparation. Basically, its something that all sophomores who wish to continue on in the program need to do so they can go to Field Training over the summer. After Field Training myself, and those of my classmates who make it through will become Professional Officer Candidates, which means that when we graduate from Embry Riddle we will be officers in the US Air Force.

I am really excited to meet the challenges that Field Training Preparation has and I am really looking forward to training this summer 🙂 There is so much to learn in order to be prepared for Field Training, it definitely requires some extra time and effort outside of school. So if you are considering joining Air Force ROTC, we would be very happy to welcome you. It is always good to see new faces, but if you intend to stay in the program just keep yourself motivated. It can be difficult at times but, I honestly love it and I have never regretted my decision to join.

If you have any comments or questions, please let me know! For more information about AFROTC here at Embry Riddle please click here. Thanks!!

Round one of Midterms

I am proud to say that I have gotten through week one of midterms. I have three down and two to go. I don’t know what it is about midterms but, I think that most college students will agree when I say this….we don’t like them until their over. Midterms are not the average exam that most new freshman are used to, for some reason they are just more stressful. Personally, I don’t like them because no matter how much I know the material I always get nervous for absolutely no reason!

keep-calm-and-study-for-midterm-3

So some tips on studying for a midterm, whether you are a first timer or not…

a) get some good sleep the night before

b) avoid caffeine the morning of

c) relax, listen to some music while you study

d) take a deep breath and recall what you know

Good-luck on those midterms everyone, may the results be ever in your favor 😉

Olympics!

Quite a few students here at Embry Riddle Prescott have been following the progression of the 2014  Olympics, have you? As of yet, there has only been one unfortunate accident with the opening ceremony. Apparently the Olympic rings were supposed to start as flowers that extended to form the well known symbol however, one of them didn’t even open at all. This has been a rather embarrassing incident for Russia but, with each new day of Olympic challenges it will soon be behind them.

The rest of the opening ceremony was really intriguing however, I certainly did not want to miss a single thing!! I think my favorite part of the Olympics is when all the athletes from almost every country in the world walk in, waving their flags. It is so cool to see so many people who are so proud and happy to be representing their country in front of the whole world. It must be an amazing thing to be able to do.

So, now its time to wonder, what part of the Olympics is your favorite? Is the opening, the skiers, the skaters…..there are so many sports to choose from!! Comment below and let us know 🙂

Where is the Winter Weather?

If you have been following the Embry Riddle Prescott blogs for some time now, you may happen to notice that this year has been quite different from the last. I talked a lot about how cold and snowy it can get here however, this year that has not been the case. Many students who have been here for several years are shocked about the warm weather we have been having since winter break. Some days it has even got up to 70 degrees and students are wearing shorts to class!

Well, I figured I would go speak to an “authority” on the weather to see what the cause of this mysterious weather is. The meteorology majors told me that our weather is caused by an unusual pattern which is connected to the warm weather that is being experienced in Northern California as well. It is also connected to the freezing weather and snowy storms that are plaguing the Eastern United States. It is just a part of the Earth’s natural cycle of weather, according to a professor who says that “every few years a system such as this sweeps across the US and although it seems unusual it is really just a part of a larger pattern.”

So if you are worried about the weather, you have nothing to fear, it will eventually correct itself and we can all get on to the classic weather of our respective regions. If you are interested in finding out more about our meteorology department please click here. We hope that you might join us here at Embry Riddle Prescott and discover what more we have to offer you!

The Importance of Hydration

index

As many of us have often heard hydration is extremely important to your health. This is your friendly reminder to hydrate in order to improve your brain function, prevent dark circles under your eyes, improve your workout endurance, and so much more. Studies actually show that sometimes when you think you are hungry that is a really a cue from your brain that you need to drink more water. This occurs because most people enjoy a beverage with their meal. It has also been shown that coffee, although a diuretic, does actually hydrate you to some extent. That dosen’t mean you can only drink coffee however.

So some easy tips to keep hydrated are grab a water bottle and take it to class, get a brita filter for your room, they might be expensive but they pay themselves off. Keep track of how much water you drink, it is recommended to drink 8 glasses of water per day. Mix a little juice into your water for flavor, fruit slices work too, and also drink a little gatorade.

If you follow these simple tips, you should be able to stay hydrated fairly well. Good luck 🙂 and remember hydration will help you focus in class and it also plays a role in preventing stress headaches!!
