Where is the Winter Weather?

If you have been following the Embry Riddle Prescott blogs for some time now, you may happen to notice that this year has been quite different from the last. I talked a lot about how cold and snowy it can get here however, this year that has not been the case. Many students who have been here for several years are shocked about the warm weather we have been having since winter break. Some days it has even got up to 70 degrees and students are wearing shorts to class!

Well, I figured I would go speak to an “authority” on the weather to see what the cause of this mysterious weather is. The meteorology majors told me that our weather is caused by an unusual pattern which is connected to the warm weather that is being experienced in Northern California as well. It is also connected to the freezing weather and snowy storms that are plaguing the Eastern United States. It is just a part of the Earth’s natural cycle of weather, according to a professor who says that “every few years a system such as this sweeps across the US and although it seems unusual it is really just a part of a larger pattern.”

So if you are worried about the weather, you have nothing to fear, it will eventually correct itself and we can all get on to the classic weather of our respective regions. If you are interested in finding out more about our meteorology department please click here. We hope that you might join us here at Embry Riddle Prescott and discover what more we have to offer you!

The Importance of Hydration

index

As many of us have often heard hydration is extremely important to your health. This is your friendly reminder to hydrate in order to improve your brain function, prevent dark circles under your eyes, improve your workout endurance, and so much more. Studies actually show that sometimes when you think you are hungry that is a really a cue from your brain that you need to drink more water. This occurs because most people enjoy a beverage with their meal. It has also been shown that coffee, although a diuretic, does actually hydrate you to some extent. That dosen’t mean you can only drink coffee however.

So some easy tips to keep hydrated are grab a water bottle and take it to class, get a brita filter for your room, they might be expensive but they pay themselves off. Keep track of how much water you drink, it is recommended to drink 8 glasses of water per day. Mix a little juice into your water for flavor, fruit slices work too, and also drink a little gatorade.

If you follow these simple tips, you should be able to stay hydrated fairly well. Good luck 🙂 and remember hydration will help you focus in class and it also plays a role in preventing stress headaches!!

As the Spring semester approaches we all have to start thinking about buying course materials again. If you want to save a few dollars on your textbooks this semester, take some advice from me 🙂 The best ways to find books are…

a) Amazon.com is a great place to find cheap books in good shape

b) Chegg.com has book purchases and rentals available

c) Bookstore rentals- cheaper and returnable

d) phone a friend!! They might have a book for sale or even for free

So when you are trying to find books this semester, keep these resources in mind and have a wonderful Spring Semester!!

Getting Into Shape in 2014

Running might be one of the best ways to get into shape beacuse it is a full body execise; As you run your body is using the muscles in your legs, rear, stomach, and shoulders. This unfortunately, is something most people do not realize, getting in shape for some means a gym membership or some intense weight lifting. However, if your goal is to be healthy and fit then running is the best activity you can do.

To train for running start off slowly, do a quater mile one day, take a break and then do a half mile the next. Just increase your run by a small increment every few days. This will slowly build up your lung and heart capacity. As you progress you will also start to notice changes in the way you run or where you are sore afterwards. This is because you are slowly strengthening your legs, abs, butt, and shoulders. Embrace it, its a good thing!!!

You can also increase your fitness with warm up stretches/workouts. All you have to do is a few simple stretches and exercises of your choosing. If used properly you will not be sore after your run. It is also important to do a cool down after a run or your muscles will be sore in regardless. Again, the cool down can be of your choosing based on the intensity of your run.

If you are someone who does not enjoy to run you can easily make it fun. When I run on my personal time I like to listen to a little music and take a few stretching breaks when I start to feel a little bit winded. You can also organize your thoughts while running, ignore them completely, and burn off some stress. There are many studies that show how beneficial exercise can be for the heart as it reduces the stress levels the body experiences from our surrondings and increases the blood flow capacity of the organ.

So in the end all I can emphasis is that you are in control of your own health, therefore, if your resolution for 2014 is to get in shape then please consider this advice and start running 🙂 Have a good year everyone!!!!!!

Another Christmas has come and gone, and boy it went fast!!! It seems that the older you get the faster life goes, quite amazing isn’t it? I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas, but now its on to the next order of buisness……2014!!

It’s time to start thinking about your resolutions and goals for the new year, so I thought it would be nice for everyone to share 🙂 My goals are…

a) max the physical fitness test

b) graduate from field training

c) go on a road trip

FTP Starts Now!!

If you join Air Force ROTC at Embry Riddle and you decide to continue in the program to become an Officer in the Air Force then you will go through Field Training Preparation (FTP) during the spring semester of your sophomore year. FTP, is exactly what it means, training to succeed in field training. It lasts the entire Spring semester and like other Air Force ROTC activities it runs concurrently with your schooling.

The overall goal of both FTP and Field Training is to mold you into an Officer of the United States Air Force. As I am now a sophomore it is my turn to go through FTP and Field Training. I am very excited to see what this new section of Air Force ROTC holds for me and I am also eager to attend Field Training as this will get me one step closer to my dream. I will let our reader’s know from time to time how things are going but, for now, I’m looking forward to the future and its challenges! Wish me luck!!
