Marine Corps Officer Selection Program

There are many who know about Army, Air Force and Navy ROTC but what about the Marine Corps? To answer that question you should read this blog. I have recently finished my application to go to Officer Candidate School (OCS) through theΒ  Platoon leaders Class which I will go more in depth about.

The first thing you are going to need to ask yourself is what does it take to be a Marine Officer and how can you reach that goal. OCS is very demanding physically and mentally there are actually a few different paths that you can take. First of course are the qualifications 1.Bachelors Degree 2.Physical Fitness Test (PFT). These and everything else I will be talking about can be found at www.Marines.com

What is Officer Candidate School?

OCS is a 12 week officer training program, this is where those who cant make it get booted and those who really want to be a Leader of Marines can truly show how much they want it. It is very tough and will break you down.

So what PLC does is take the 12 week course and allows you to attend two 6 week courses over two different summers.

Next is which path do you want to take. so what you need to know. You can do Navy ROTC (Marine Option) or Naval Academy (Marine Option), Platoon Leaders Class (PLC) and of course you can do OCS after graduation.

Each of these main choices have its pros and cons. For now I will consider the Platoon leaders Class. PLC is open to full time college students ages 17-28.

I have recently submitted my application through PLC, What you need to know about this option like all others is that you are applying (competitively) for a chance to go to OCS in the summer in between school semesters. It is a privilege to get the chance to become a Marine Officer. The process is simple, and enjoyable for those that really want it. Before you jumo right into it i suggest you do some research about the U.S. Marines and what it means to be an Officer of the toughest men and women in the military.

Do you have what it takes to become a Marine?

Where is the Winter Weather?

fair weather clouds 1

If you have been following the Embry Riddle Prescott blogs for some time now, you may happen to notice that this year has been quite different from the last. I talked a lot about how cold and snowy it can get here however, this year that has not been the case. Many students who have been here for several years are shocked about the warm weather we have been having since winter break. Some days it has even got up to 70 degrees and students are wearing shorts to class!

Well, I figured I would go speak to an “authority” on the weather to see what the cause of this mysterious weather is. The meteorology majors told me that our weather is caused by an unusual pattern which is connected to the warm weather that is being experienced in Northern California as well. It is also connected to the freezing weather and snowy storms that are plaguing the Eastern United States. It is just a part of the Earth’s natural cycle of weather, according to a professor who says that “every few years a system such as this sweeps across the US and although it seems unusual it is really just a part of a larger pattern.”

So if you are worried about the weather, you have nothing to fear, it will eventually correct itself and we can all get on to the classic weather of our respective regions. If you are interested in finding out more about our meteorology department please click here. We hope that you might join us here at Embry Riddle Prescott and discover what more we have to offer you!

Back to the Grind

Getting back in to the new semester can have its struggles but it’s always nice jumping back into reality after a nice break. In this blog I will discuss some things that we all dread and some things that we look forward to when coming back to start another semester at Embry Riddle, Prescott campus.

When it comes to starting the new semester there will always be the thought of stress from the load of work you will be taking on, In the back of our mind. Everybody deals with stress differently, but the best way to deal with the new semester, especially if you just finished a rough one and need to work on your GPA, is to come back to school prepared. When you feel prepared and ready to take on your responsibilities you will have the upper hand, you will feel confident in your work. Confidence can play a big part in success.

After about the first week of break I had had enough of the lazy days with nothing productive to do. So naturally I was excited to come back and start my studies again. Of course I was excited to see my close friends again but nothing beats the feeling of being one step closer to getting a degree and a big kid job.

Another plus to starting a new semester at Embry-Riddle is the experiences you will get from it. Not only is it a college experience but you will meet people from all over the world, with different talents and different ways of thinking. Its a great way to open your connections and view the world in different eyes.

I wish everyone good luck with the New Year and new semester.

Fly, Fly, Fly, then Fly More!

Wow the last few months have sure been a whirlwind. I must first start by apologizing for my lack of posts and information over the past few months. Since this summer ended, I have been heavily involved with my activities and roles in my organizations, as well as taking a full class load, and continuing to work towards becoming a flight instructor. That being said, I guess I will start with some catch up as to what I have been doing. Since August, I have been fulfilling my role as the Chief Pilot for the Golden Eagle’s Flight Team for the ERAU Prescott Campus. The team has been well underway preparing for our regional competition which begins the first week of February. As the Chief Pilot, I am essentially responsible for the oversight of all of the team’s flying activities. It is my responsibility to create flying schedules for all of our pilots, ensure they meet the recent flight experience needed to fly, coach and teach members for competition, and prepare all of the aircraft for competition. On top of this, I am also the coordinator of the aircraft recognition event, where I teach members how to identify and differentiate the differences between aircraft for the tests that we take at competition. In addition to these responsibilities, I compete in a total of 7 of the 11 events at competition and have to put in a minimum of approximately 15-20 hours a week. As competition grows near, my responsibilities and dedication will increase exponentially. ERAU is hosting the competition this year, and approximately 12 other schools will be attending to compete including the Air Force Academy, Utah Valley University, San Jose State, Mt. San Antonio College, and several others.

Well enough about competition and the team, the biggest time commitment that I have had lately as an Aeronautical Science (Pilot) Major has been flying of course. I was recently hired by ERAU as a flight instructor, and have been working vigorously on my flight instructor training. In addition to working towards completing my instructor certificate, I am also conducting my “New Hire” training as they call it. This training is a system that is used by major aviation companies such as the airlines to familiarize all the pilots that they hire with the standards and methods of operation needed to work for that company. So between these two programs, I have had my hands full to say the least. I cannot wait to officially be given flight students and share my passion and knowledge for aviation with them! Also attached to this post I will include a video that I recently created that shows all of the flying I had the pleasure of doing during my multi-engine upgrade and the flight out to Oshkosh for the EAA Airventure 2013.

The Importance of Hydration

index

As many of us have often heard hydration is extremely important to your health. This is your friendly reminder to hydrate in order to improve your brain function, prevent dark circles under your eyes, improve your workout endurance, and so much more. Studies actually show that sometimes when you think you are hungry that is a really a cue from your brain that you need to drink more water. This occurs because most people enjoy a beverage with their meal. It has also been shown that coffee, although a diuretic, does actually hydrate you to some extent. That dosen’t mean you can only drink coffee however.

So some easy tips to keep hydrated are grab a water bottle and take it to class, get a brita filter for your room, they might be expensive but they pay themselves off. Keep track of how much water you drink, it is recommended to drink 8 glasses of water per day. Mix a little juice into your water for flavor, fruit slices work too, and also drink a little gatorade.

If you follow these simple tips, you should be able to stay hydrated fairly well. Good luck πŸ™‚ and remember hydration will help you focus in class and it also plays a role in preventing stress headaches!!

Getting Into Shape in 2014

Running might be one of the best ways to get into shape beacuse it is a full body execise; As you run your body is using the muscles in your legs, rear, stomach, and shoulders. This unfortunately, is something most people do not realize, getting in shape for some means a gym membership or some intense weight lifting. However, if your goal is to be healthy and fit then running is the best activity you can do.

To train for running start off slowly, do a quater mile one day, take a break and then do a half mile the next. Just increase your run by a small increment every few days. This will slowly build up your lung and heart capacity. As you progress you will also start to notice changes in the way you run or where you are sore afterwards. This is because you are slowly strengthening your legs, abs, butt, and shoulders. Embrace it, its a good thing!!!

You can also increase your fitness with warm up stretches/workouts. All you have to do is a few simple stretches and exercises of your choosing. If used properly you will not be sore after your run. It is also important to do a cool down after a run or your muscles will be sore in regardless. Again, the cool down can be of your choosing based on the intensity of your run.

If you are someone who does not enjoy to run you can easily make it fun. When I run on my personal time I like to listen to a little music and take a few stretching breaks when I start to feel a little bit winded. You can also organize your thoughts while running, ignore them completely, and burn off some stress. There are many studies that show how beneficial exercise can be for the heart as it reduces the stress levels the body experiences from our surrondings and increases the blood flow capacity of the organ.

So in the end all I can emphasis is that you are in control of your own health, therefore, if your resolution for 2014 is to get in shape then please consider this advice and start running πŸ™‚ Have a good year everyone!!!!!!
