Dynamics Modeling

As a part of one of my courses I have to model a system using dynamics. For those of you who do not know, dynamics is a core class in the Aerospace engineering major that basically allows you to predict the motion of objects under certain conditions. There are many methods that can be used to predict motion such as sum of forces, work energy, rigid body, and sum of forces/moments.

In my project I am predicting the motion of a spring pendulum system using all of the methods listed above. In addition to those methods, I am also using the CATIA design software to create the mass that oscillates on the end of the spring. (check out the picture below to see an actual springΒ  pendulum)

Spring-pendulum

So far, it has been going very well, I have most of the methods done but, I still need to identify the k (spring constant) of the spring I am using in order to obtain a more accurate mathematical model. Have any of you modeled something dynamically before? If so, we engineers at Embry Riddle would love to hear about it!! Please comment below, and I will be sure to keep you updated on my progress!!

As you know, we have our very own softball team going through their first season here in Prescott, but I have received a lot of questions in regards to the other teams that we have here at Embry Riddle Prescott. Well, to answer that question we have volleyball, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s cross country, women’s cross country, wrestling, men’s golf, women’s golf and of course softball!

The newest team that we are expecting to have next fall is men’s basketball!! We are very excited to be adding this sport to our program and we all have our fingers crossed as to how well the season will go. If you are a potential freshman who is interested in joining our basketball team please let us know! We would be more than happy to welcome you in our first season. Wouldn’t it be cool to say that you were on the team the first season that it has been established? I sure think so, so please click here for more information about our sports teams πŸ™‚

We hope to see you on campus soon!!!

Time Management

Hey there everyone, today I just want to talk a little bit about time management, this is a topic that can be a little touchy because, I’m sure we all know that we can be managing our time a little better than we actually do. So I would like to share with you some classic tips and tricks that will help you stay on track and also a few common weaknesses.

Here are those tips and tricks!!

StudySkillsGIrlwithBorder1. Set a study schedule with a certain amount of time dedicated for every activity, class, and homework that you need to get done

2. If you really need it, set a timer.

3. Take small study breaks

4. Drink water not coffee and limit your snacking. This will help keep you awake longer.

5. Set study goals that have rewards for accomplishing them

Common Weaknesses :/

f6db1f628d8301dc26df3b90ae1ab0578ded13d33e2a3880e07bb938308aab6d1. Studying in front of the TV….no beuno, I admit I have problems with this one too!

2. Frequent and long breaks

3. Texting while trying to study or do homework….VERY DISTRACTING

4. Facebooking while researching online

5. Procrastinating

6. Using a solutions manual…not helpful in the end as you get the right answer without learning anything!

Hopefully, you are now a little bit more aware of some good study habits as well as some poor ones that can be avoided or changed. Studying well does take some degree of discipline and training but, you can do it!!! Set down with that work and get going, it will be done in no time at all πŸ™‚ Have a great week everyone!

Where has the time gone?

A few days agoERAU_logo_0509 I actually realized that there are only 5 weeks left of the Spring 2014 semester. I can hardly believe that my time here has gone so quickly!! It has most certainly been a fun ride πŸ™‚ In the last two years I have become an Air Force ROTC cadet, a student employee, an engineer, and a sleep deprived broke college kid. However, I don’t regret it one little bit. Embry Riddle Prescott has been the best choice I have made in my short lifetime. I have learned so much since I came here and made so many friends that I am sure will last a lifetime.

Come to Embry Riddle and let your dreams take flight!

Come to Embry Riddle and let your dreams take flight!

Looking back on it all makes me feel really old to be honest, even though I am really not!! It is really cool to see not only myself but, the other students I came in with Freshman year growing into professionals with the aid of the faculty and staff on this campus. I can honestly say that without our small class sizes and individual times with professors that our experience at Embry Riddle would be very different. It is for this reason that I still think my decision to come here was the best one ever! Because of the level of help that students get from actual professors who have had actual experience in the industry in which they teach the Embry Riddle education is the best value for your investment in your future!

I love being able to write about my experiences to share with our readers whoever you may be πŸ™‚ because I like to inform you of the real college life that students here in Prescott are undergoing. It is my hope that you will join us here one day, and as always please comment if you would like more information or if you just wanna say hi!

What I did over Spring Break

CAM00587 IMG_01682014-03-13 10.46.202014-03-13 10.09.53

Hey there everyone,Β  I bet you would like to know what I did for fun this Spring Break. Well, honestly I slept a lot, went shopping, watched a bunch of movies, and…..saw some of the coolest airplanes ever!!! There is a little museum in between Prescott and the Grand Canyon called “Planes of Fame” and boy is it mind blowing!!

A few friends and I just happened to see it on the side of the road and in a split second we made the decision to pull over and check it out. The staff were so friendly, and fun fact, military personnel, Embry Riddle students, and people who fly into the local air port can get in for free. They have a retired Blue Angels Jet, several rare air craft, and an amazing amount of memorabilia.

Another cool fact is that the prototype for one of the Prescott campus’s very own wind tunnels “little blue” is actually housed in the museum!!! I never knew that!! The stuff we saw at the museum was amazing!!! I really encourage you to go ahead and check it out if you are in the area, especially if you will be here for our Preview Day!!!

See ya soon πŸ˜‰ and have an awesome Wednesday!

Technology Tips

index

In the Admissions office we often get questions about what type of technology is most helpful for students who are coming to college. Well, I have compiled a list and interesting facts/comments below that should be really helpful. Please read on!!

a) Tablets: If you are a flight student an apple ipad is the best. If you are not, a Samsung tablet totally rocks for checking and sending email in between classes. Games of course are handy to have when you get bored too πŸ˜‰

b) Laptops: Bring a good one. You do not want to have to replace it while in college, trust me, its no beuno I have been there and done that. I prefer Samsung and/or apple but, as long as you bring one you can trust it will all be well.

c) Cell phone: Oddly enough, some people come to college without one. NOT A GOOD IDEA. How else will you call home, keep in touch with friends, and make professional phone calls for internships, payments on loans etc. BRING A CELL PHONE.

Well, those are the three main things that you will need technology wise in college. Of course, TV’s, gaming systems, and things like that are optional but, you won’t use those as often if you are doing the whole college thing right…..just sayin.

Hope you enjoyed reading. Have an awesome day everyone!!!

Update on my Fourth Semester at Riddle

My time here at Embry Riddle has certainly gone fast, it seems like just yesterday that I was a freshman, and now I almost a junior….so weird!!! This semester has gone pretty well so far though, I am still in Field Training Preparation, and that is going well, as are my other gauntlet engineering courses.

For those of our readers who don’t really know what I mean by the “gauntlet” and “Field Training Preparation” it is really just the hardest semester of Air Force ROTC training and Aerospace engineering combined. I am taking fundamental classes of engineering science, chemistry, extra Air Force Training, and a graduate level math course.Β  As I said though, things are going quite well thanks to the support of professors, and mentors from Air Force.

Helping-MentorThe neat thing about having a tough semester here at Riddle is that the professors and upperclassman are more than willing to help you out with advice, tutoring, etc. That is something that you do not find at many universities across the nation. So when you are narrowing down that list of colleges to go to just remember that πŸ™‚

If you have any specific questions about what exactly I have been up to, please feel free to comment below and I will be happy to answer your questions. That’s all for now folks!! Have a great day!!!
