Another quick note on how to save $$$$ in college is to utilize the campus copy center!! At Embry Riddle Prescott out copy center is one of the best and here is how it can help you!!

1. If you buy a PDF book for a lot cheaper than a bound copy, you can print it (for free) in the library and take it to the copy center to be bound for about 3 bucks. This saves you on average about $100+ a semester!

2. Laminating formula sheets is an awesome way to ensure that you will never loose your formulas. I did this for Calculus freshman year and I am still using my laminated formula sheet in MA 441, which is a graduate level course in Mathematical Methods for Engineering. So for a dollar I have a lot of use on that sheet.

3. Faxes can be sent through the copy center, this is a resource that many people do not take advantage of, it is a lot cheaper than any place in town!

4. And last but not least, You can have your notes bound by the copy center which will help you with studying come finals week.

Selling Books or Electronics?

When you are in college cash can be hard to come by, so here are some places that might be able to help you out when it comes to getting cash for your old books and electronics…

Amazon Trade In: They have awesome prices and most of the time for electronics they will pay more than best buy 🙂

Pawn Shops: AVOID THEM THERE IS NO POINT!!!

Craigslist: As long as you aren’t afraid of the Craigslist killer (who by the way was caught early Sunday morning), this site is a great place to advertise and sell items in the local area for your list price.

On Campus: All it takes is a few posters, and you could get the amount you desire for that textbook or old laptop. There’s almost always someone out there who is willing to buy 🙂

The Power of the Go-Pro

It is time for a Technology update!! The topic, you ask?? The indestructible Go Pro!!

I have heard a lot of stories about how indestructible a Go-Pro is but, I honestly never believed them until my friend sent me this video. It is really crazy, the man in the video dropped the Go-Pro as he leaped out of a plane to go skydiving. 8 months later he finally located it in a pig pen of a local farm. All he had to do was charge it up and recover the video!!!

I was so shocked that I started asking around to see if any of my friends had heard of stuff like this happening. Oddly enough, a campus group called Chi Alpha had a similar experience. Chi Alpha is a christian fellowship that takes fun trips all over Arizona and even into Utah. On one of these trips a member dropped their Go Pro into Lake Powell and was unable to retrieve it. Well, a year later they returned and the water level was significantly lower, they were actually able to locate and recover the Go-Pro!!!! To add on to that, all the footage was intact and there was no damage to the Go Pro even after it had been underwater for a year!!!!

So, if you are considering purchasing a Go-Pro, I would say that it is definitely worth the money 🙂 Thanks for reading!!!!

Valentines Day is here!!

What are you planning for Valentines day? It is that day that we all dread or look forward to, personally, I am a little bit of both 🙂 Valentines Day puts alot of pressure on couples, especially in college when finances are tight! There is just too much expectation on a day like this that revolves around couples.

If you are on the other side of the spectrum, it can make you pretty sad but, I have a few tips and tricks to help you fight those Valentines Day blues..

1) Watch a movie by yourself to enjoy some alone time

2) Treat yourself, maybe eat some chocolate, take a nice relaxing bath, go window shopping, or get a massage….really just pamper yourself!!

3) If you are in a relationship, take the relaxing route, stay at home and watch a movie, eat some fancy finger food and just enjoy each other’s company. This will really relieve some of the built up stress and expectations of the holiday

4) Also, if you don’t want to be a loner, hang out with some single friends, maybe go to a party.

5) All in all, don’t let one silly holiday get you down. Have fun being who you are and treat your self to something special 🙂

Pets in the Dorms

So today I would like to address a very common question: What kind of pets are we allowed to have in the dorms at Embry Riddle? Well……only fish. The official rules say that whatever it is it still must fit in a five gallon tank. Please don’t be funny and try to trap some poor cat in a five gallon tank, that’s animal abuse….try to stick with a fish or fishes. You can have as many fish as you want, with in reason of course as long as they can all be contained in a single 5 gallon tank.

Personally, I have had a betta fish since freshman year. They are pretty, easy to take care of, and actually enjoy your company if placed on your desk while you work. My fish even chases laser pointers…..which I should probably be more concerned about than amused. However, if you really want a fuzzy pet you can try and work out something with housing and residence life, no guarantees but, you might be able to keep a hamster or something.

The funniest things I have seen/heard of as far as pets living in the dorms go is that over summer someone had a Labrador in their room that was never discovered. I know of at least three cats that have lived in the hall closet of the upper class-man apartments…poor kitties. The weirdest one I have seen is a 6 inch fish that bites people, so please don;t get one that big. Also, be considerate to animals. I know that some people just rally want a pet but, think about what you are putting them through if you have to hide them all the time..

Don’t do this to a cat

Overall, stick with a fish, they like small spaces and you won’t have to hide them from anyone, unless they bite…

Air Force ROTC

Hello again, I thought it might be time to give y’all an update on what I’ve been up to in Air Force ROTC at Embry Riddle Prescott. I am a second semester sophomore, which means that I am going through Field Training Preparation. Basically, its something that all sophomores who wish to continue on in the program need to do so they can go to Field Training over the summer. After Field Training myself, and those of my classmates who make it through will become Professional Officer Candidates, which means that when we graduate from Embry Riddle we will be officers in the US Air Force.

I am really excited to meet the challenges that Field Training Preparation has and I am really looking forward to training this summer 🙂 There is so much to learn in order to be prepared for Field Training, it definitely requires some extra time and effort outside of school. So if you are considering joining Air Force ROTC, we would be very happy to welcome you. It is always good to see new faces, but if you intend to stay in the program just keep yourself motivated. It can be difficult at times but, I honestly love it and I have never regretted my decision to join.

Round one of Midterms

I am proud to say that I have gotten through week one of midterms. I have three down and two to go. I don’t know what it is about midterms but, I think that most college students will agree when I say this….we don’t like them until their over. Midterms are not the average exam that most new freshman are used to, for some reason they are just more stressful. Personally, I don’t like them because no matter how much I know the material I always get nervous for absolutely no reason!

So some tips on studying for a midterm, whether you are a first timer or not…

a) get some good sleep the night before

b) avoid caffeine the morning of

c) relax, listen to some music while you study

d) take a deep breath and recall what you know

Olympics!

Quite a few students here at Embry Riddle Prescott have been following the progression of the 2014 Olympics, have you? As of yet, there has only been one unfortunate accident with the opening ceremony. Apparently the Olympic rings were supposed to start as flowers that extended to form the well known symbol however, one of them didn’t even open at all. This has been a rather embarrassing incident for Russia but, with each new day of Olympic challenges it will soon be behind them.

The rest of the opening ceremony was really intriguing however, I certainly did not want to miss a single thing!! I think my favorite part of the Olympics is when all the athletes from almost every country in the world walk in, waving their flags. It is so cool to see so many people who are so proud and happy to be representing their country in front of the whole world. It must be an amazing thing to be able to do.

So, now its time to wonder, what part of the Olympics is your favorite? Is the opening, the skiers, the skaters…..there are so many sports to choose from!! Comment below and let us know 🙂

Competition Has Arrived!

Well as of today, the reality of my upcoming flight competition has hit me. Today as I drove to the airport to begin my flight practice, I noticed that at least four of the teams for our upcoming competition have arrived. The first official competition events begin on Tuesday morning, and will continue through Friday with an awards ceremony on Saturday. I will be competing in all 4 flying events, an IFR simulator event, and the aircraft recognition event. This year the competition for our region has been intensified by the decision to combine our regional competition with another region, adding the US Air Force Academy, Utah Valley University, and several others to our competition. Since the competition is being hosted by us, we do have the “home field advantage,” but it doesn’t mean we are taking our practice lightly. This is the only preparation we will have before we fly back out to Ohio in May to compete at nationals in Columbus, Ohio, and we will use this experience as a measurement to see the performance of this years team in a true competition environment. I cannot wait to represent my team and my school, but with that also comes the responsibility and pressure to succeed. I will try to continue posting as the competition gets underway!

If you have any kind of curiosity you might be thinking, well does Embry-Riddle offer anything else besides Flight and Aerospace Engineering? Of course we do, At both Campuses there is a variety of things you can study. From Aerospace engineering to Software engineering to Homeland Security.

But I am more Interested In discussing some of the newer degree programs like Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, and Computer Engineering. these degree programs are in DEMAND! Its rare these days to find someone with one of these degrees and companies are looking for them. An Average calculated salary of an Electrical engineer is just under $90,000. But of course any Engineering degree will be great to have.

So what exactly do these degree have to offer? Well BSEE is an exploding field and has many jobs to offer, from Programing, research engineer, systems Engineer (Avionics), Test Engineer to Design Engineer. And if you are looking at getting into the military, and need scholarships or want a competitive degree? well this is it.

If you Choose to take up one of these technical degrees you will learn about circuits, circuit design/components, Systems, Controls and Programming. These are the basics of these degree programs, you will have the chance to understand what is happening inside your Playstation 4 or your XBox and your computer. The core of technology today is based off of what we know in these fields. If you think about it your everything from your phone to Facebook and your TV has required the knowledge of someone in these fields. Its quit amazing as I am studying Electrical Engineering at ERAU Prescott, I cant wit to get to my senior Design Project.

Almost every company that is looking for engineers is in need of Electrical Engineers, Software Engineers and Computer Engineers. These types of technical Degrees offer many challenges and types of classes. although each University may require you to take a few different classes or offer different technical electives, the overall objective is the same. For instance at Embry-Riddle you might pick up a minor in Unnamed aerial vehicle systems, which other colleges wont. Why does ERAU offer it and not others? well ERAU is aimed at Aviation and Engineering its as simple as that.

So encourage all readers to take a look at Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering and Software Engineering Degree Programs.
