Keeping up With all Your Work

For some students it may be easy just to attend class and ace all the exams and for others like myself, this would lead into a down fall with grades. So today I will go into a few personal tips on keeping up with all the course work in order to maintain good grades.

When it comes to engineering courses at Embry-Riddle there is work to do outside of the classroom. Most of the time it will take more then just attending class to pass with good grades. The most significant tool I use to study and keep on track is homework. When you keep up with homework it becomes easier to stay on top of everything. It also helps retain the information for when the exam comes around.

The next step is to be sure you attend class and… pay ATTENTION… it isn’t enough to not skip class but to attention is the key. Sometimes teachers may be less than exciting but the knowledge they hold is essential to the learning process.

The last thing I would say is to take a break when you feel like you need one, even if its barely Tuesday and you’re feeling way too stressed or unfocused to do anything. It’s okay to relax for a bit, in fact, it’s crucial to improving your performance when you’re tired or not focused.

So keep your head in the game and remember why you are doing all this hard work. Stay motivated! Thanks for reading.

Halloween

default_image_city_halloween2

Halloween is coming up, have you found a costume yet? I haven’t but, Prescott, AZ has some great places to get a costume for the holiday. There are also some really awesome public haunted houses and pumpkin patches to see if you (like all college kids) are too old to go trick or treating.

The campus is also hosting a costume competition to celebrate and the student with the best costume has a chance at a prize!! So if you are in town come check it out. We have a lot of really fun and festive events going on and we love to welcome new faces to our Embry-Riddle campus community!

Graveyard of darkness

The Graveyard of Darkness is your chance to find out what is behind the RASC Safety Building, but beware and watch where you’re going because dangers lurk around every corner!

Scooby Doo Clue

Or if Scooby Doo is more your style, we have the ultimate Clue game going on this Friday. The event will include nine crime scene investigations located throughout campus. Each location will allow the students to investigate, gather information, and obtain clues.

If you want some more information please visit our main page. Happy Halloween!

Career Expo at Embry-Riddle

Wow! What a crazy week. If you don’t already know this past week on Thursday          Embry-Riddle, Prescott campus held the school year’s first career expo. Followed by that starting on Friday was OctoberWest. Today I will go a bit into the career expo, and my next blog will be about OctoberWest.

As far as the career expo goes, for those whom never been to one I will give you a short description then I will discuss about this year’s expo.

A career expo consists of companies looking for interns, co-ops, or new employees. Usually career expos happen on a school campus. For instance at Embry-Riddle we have companies ranging from Garmin AT, Boeing, Honeywell, Edwards Air Force Test Center to the FBI and to Airlines looking for pilots. As an example this year Honeywell was only looking for Electrical-Engineer interns but Boeing was looking for a wide variety of Engineer interns.

Career expos are mostly if not always a professional environment, this means you need to dress appropriately (suits, business formal, etc…).

Fortunately for me I happen to be studying Electrical Engineering which is one of the most desired degrees of study at the moment. Most engineering companies are looking for experienced and knowledgeable young men and women. So if you are a freshman that has yet to take any higher level engineering classes, you are probably out of luck. But this is a great chance for you to connect with companies, learn what they’re about and make connections within the industry.

If you are a junior or senior your chances of obtaining an internship or a job are greatly improved. For those looking for a job/internship, it is customary to research the companies you plan on talking with. This shows you are very interested in there companies and you won’t be wasting their time.

So the next time the career expo comes around don’t forget to attend no matter what year you are in, learn about the atmosphere and what to expect and how to act.

Thanks for reading! Tomorrow I will update you on OctoberWest so stay tuned.

Career Day

002-professional-resume-cv-vol2-print-profile-vector

For those of our students who haven’t heard, its Career Day today!!! Grab that resume and head on down to our Activity Center where numerous Aerospace companies have gathered to educate you about the opportunities that await when you graduate. Additionally, there might be some internship opportunities involved 🙂 But, you will never know if you don’t get out there ans start the job search.

Many companies actually love to hire interns as they are good potential employees. An internship is for you to decide if you want to work in a particular side of the Aerospace industry and also for the corporation to evaluate you. If you do well enough you have a shot at an awesome job after graduation. If that doesn’t motivate you, here is something that will! Some internships or Co-ops provide college credits and you get paid to learn more about the industry/your future career.

Grab that resume and get going!!!!

Update on Junior Year

may-junior-year-be-ever-in-your-favor

As some of you may know, I am a Junior here in Embry Riddle Prescott 🙂 So far this year I have really been enjoying my coursework. A lot of my professors are more trusting in me to get my work done so they don’t collect homework anymore, and for those professors that do collect homework, I seem to be doing pretty well.

I think my favorite class this semester is Structures 1, it is definitely really cool to see how all the past two years of classes applies to the design of an aircraft. My midterm for that class is next week, and I’m nervous but, I am sure it will go well 🙂

Other than that, I am just doing the usual working (and still being broke #collegelife), going to classes, being secretary of an engineering society, and of course my favorite being a POC in AFROTC!!!

October West

October West is coming up fast! The event starts 2 October and ends 4 October, its a great time for our prospective students to come out and visit the campus or participate in some of the fun events. We will also be having a Wings Out West air show during this time so please come on by and check it out! For more information on the event please visit our alumni relations website.

Roommate Relationships

As of last weekend I took a camping trip at Lake Powell with my roommates, so with the experience I had I feel this is a great time to go into roommate relationships. There are s couple topics at hand but first I will get into what it is like having roommates. Then I will go into how to deal with them whether you like them or not along with some of my personal experiences.

Having roommates, one of two things can happen; 1) You like them and enjoy there company possibly becoming best friends or roommates in future semesters or two, you have serious roommate problems and cannot stand them. Both happen quit often and are very possible. Fortunately for me I have enjoyed my roommates and become very close to them.

Most of the roommates if not all are also new to the scene, just new to college no parents, new friends and a new lifestyle. It is a drastic change that we all deal with, but how you react to it and how you handle your relationships are all variables. In other words no one can tell you how your roommate relationships will turnout. But with a little effort from all parties it ca turn out nicely.

As I have just experienced a camping trip last weekend with my roommates, I hvae some good advice. The tip that you should hold at the top of your list is be PATIENT. yes be patient as you would with anyone else, at the same time if you encounter a problem confront it. Have a normal conversation about whats on your nerve. That is really the only thing to do I you don’t want your relationship with your roommates turning upside down.

You Will experience great moments and sad ones with your roommates, but all in all in the end all the experiences we have together shape our personalities. So take advantage of having a roommate and really get to know the person, I did and it has been one of the best decisions I have made being here at Embry-Riddle.

Junior Year Studying Electrical Engineer at ERAU

As you may already know I am currently a Junior at Embry-Riddle, Prescott campus studying Electrical Engineering. Today I will go into the awesome classes I am currently taking to give you an idea of what to look forward to in studying this field of engineering.

First off as Electrical engineers there are many different areas of expertise to get into, which means that as an undergraduate you will get a little taste of everything. so whether you like power or not doesn’t quite matter yet because you will take a power class anyway. This serves to our benefit though as it allows you to better understand what you would personally enjoy as a career.

So as far as I have come today I am currently taking; Signal Processing plus the lab, Electronic Devices plus the lab, Math for engineers with physics, and Computer Science 1 (a.k.a. C programming). Although we have just started the semester I personally enjoy the Electronic Devices class the most, so that is what I will go a little in to depth with next.

In Electronic Devices we will be getting into electronic circuits, such as an Integrated circuit compared to Discrete components. We will also get into Amplifier frequency response, Diodes, Transistors, and Feedback systems, although there is so much more I can talk about this is just a brief description. (Note: if you click on the link to electronic devices, it will take you to Wikipedia, yes I know you may be skeptical about Wiki. but it has a diverse amount of knowledge about the subject so feel free to take a look).

The reason I believe I enjoy this class in particular is because it is taught in a top down design, meaning you see the big picture of each little component first so you can really see how everything comes together.

Good Reads

For those of you who like to enjoy a good book once in a while here is one that I am currently reading and really enjoying. Its called “The Silver Star” by Jeannette Walls. It is a fantastic story, not too much dialog but amazing descriptive verbiage and excellent use of the first person view. You actually feel like you are in the main character’s head, experiencing everything as an 11 year old girl in a big mysterious yet narrow world.

I highly recommend checking this book out before the summer ends as once classes start it will become a lot more difficult to balance classes, events, and such with your reading time.  If you have any comments or book suggestions for our readers please let us know by leaving a comment below. As always, have a wonderful day, thanks for reading, and we hope to see you on campus this fall!!

One last thing!!! For those of you incoming ROTC cadets, check out amazon for some books on leadership tips, they are great to have and I personally use them often!!

Professionalism

Please Don't Try This One

Please Don’t Try This One

College is that time in life where a lot of people go crazy trying new things and getting certain types of body art that they were not allowed to get before. I am sure many of you have heard cautions against it before however, with the fall semester right around the corner it is time for our new freshman to hear it again!

The piercings and tattoos you get in college need to be either limited or discreet as once you enter the professional world upon graduation they can impact your future. Many companies will not hire if you have inappropriate or easily visible tattoos. (Easily visible means large or eye catching) It is best to place tattoos where they will not be seen when you are wearing business attire.

The same goes for piercings. Ladies you must limit the number of ear and facial piercings you receive as these have a hug impact on your professional image. Sure you can keep that nose piercing while in college but when you graduate say good bye!! Additionally, do not get eyebrow piercings. These often require surgery to repair when you decide that you no longer want it and they can ruin a fair number of interviews for you.

With that said, be responsible adults with your body art. What you do everyday will always affect your future. Thanks for reading!!!
