Working in the admissions office means that you hear some pretty interesting questions all the time. These are questions that some students might need to know the answers to if their planning on attending the Embry Riddle Campus in Prescott AZ. So, jumping right in…..

Q: What is college dorm life like?

A: To me its like living in a hotel room that you have to clean.

Q: Can I bring my bike?

A: Yes, it is really helpful to get around campus and we highly encourage students to bring one. We have bicycle racks all over campus where you can store your bike when it is not in use. In addition, your bike must be registered with the safety office, this is free of charge.

Q: How much is it to register a car, and how long does registration last?

A: It is $60 and it lasts for a full calender year. Once you are registered you are guaranteed on campus parking.

Q: Are college finals scary for freshman?

A: It depends, I have heard some horror stories, but for me they weren’t too bad at all. Just study, eat well, and get some sleep the night before and you will be fine.

Q: What makes Prescott better than Daytona Beach?

A: For flight students, the weather is better here for flying than at Daytona. For Engineers, the faculty and staff try really hard to get to know you and encourage you in your chosen path. Since it is a smaller campus than Daytona, you get more one and one time with professors that helps to develop some awesome references.

Q: Do you like living in Arizona?

A: Yes, I love it here. When I graduate I really hope that I can get stationed in AZ, it is a really cool place to live. There’s tons of outdoor things to do and really nice people to meet.

Its day one of the new semester all over again!! It’s amazing how fast it has gone, but here we are ready to begin again and hopefully succeed in the new year of 2014 🙂 I am still waiting to go to my first class, this is one of the only semesters that I don’t have a class ridiculously early in the morning so I am excited. My hope for this semester is to either maintain or raise my current GPA, which is pretty good right now so we will see 🙂

What is your goal for this semester? Please comment below and let us know, we would like to hear from our readers. No matter what your goals are the best way to achieve them is hard work. It can be difficult to stay motivated but, here are some helpful tips that will help you succeed in school this semester.

a) visit the library

b) talk to your professors

c) study with friends/ in groups

d) relax a little, taking a moment to clear your head will really help with your studies

e) stay in touch with friends and family

f) smile, its gonna be a great semester!!!

Midterms are on Their Way!

Last Friday I had my first midterm exam in statics, and I’ve got two more this upcoming week. School is definitely progressing quickly around here. Soon it will be Thanksgiving and then finals time, its such a weird thing to think but, don’t let it catch you by surprise!! Start preparing now, don’t wait until the day before the exam to study, this is not high school, this is a highly respected University so don’t forget it!!

Tests are definitely something that need to be taken seriously, so like I said start preparing early by asking questions, doing the homework, reviewing up to 3 days before the exam and clarifying any topics that you are unsure of. Doing this will ensure a higher score on your exams, which will help that GPA!

Even though it can be easy to ignore what you have to do I strongly urge you to put your school first. Yes it is awesome to go out and have fun while you are in college but, don’t forget why you came here…EDUCATION. To get that degree you need to be successful academically, that is why it is so important to put studies first.

The best way to do so is to make a list of the homework and studying that you know you must complete. Do as much as you can every day and when you are finished take a break to enjoy yourself, go out and have some fun. This will really help out your grades and you will get the college experience that you wan at the same time.

So all in all enjoy yourself but, don’t let exams and classwork to catch you by surprise!!

Study Up

Summer is the perfect time to spend reviewing material from old courses in preparation for the new ones that you will be taking in the Fall semester. To prepare for my next level of Physics I have been reviewing physics 1, this has actually been really helpful to me because I understand a lot more of the basic materials then I did before.The Physics 1 for Dummies book has actually been a great study resource as well, I suggest maybe using a book like this one for review, it is not as concentrated as the text used in the course so it is a little more easy to pick up the concepts.

Another thing that many cadets do over summer is study for the AFOQT, or the Air Force Officer Qualifying Test. This is a test that depending on whether you pass or fail, allows you to continue in the AFROTC program and hopefully commission as an officer in the US Air Force. So as you might have guessed, this is is exactly what I am doing.

I also have a for Dummies book to study for the exam, I honestly prefer the for Dummies books because they have so much good information in them and they are written by people who have actually taken the exams or courses.So the authors really know their stuff and they know how to present it in a light that interests the reader and aids in the development of their knowledge in that field.

I urge you to please spend at least an hour a day reviewing topics that you are not entirely comfortable with. This can really give you the upper hand in your studies as in college all the courses you take have aspects in them that you will continually use throughout your college career and perhaps beyond.

Heat Wave

As some of you might have noticed, depending on your location of course, there has been a massive heat wave passing over certain parts of the country (a current map is displayed below 😀 ). Many of the people across the nation just rely on their personal thermometers, their senses upon walking outside, or on the local news. However, this is not the case for a special number of students on the Embry Riddle Prescott campus, these students are Meteorology Majors.

As a little kid I was fascinated by the thought of analyzing weather patterns, however, we all know that didn’t work out as now I have chosen to become an Engineer. The point is that the meteorology students here on the Prescott campus never lost their fascination with the bizarre patterns of weather, whenever you see a student staring at the sky with no airplanes in sight, I can assure you that you are seeing a meteorology student.

The passion that these students have is alike the passion that each of our students has for their field of study. Embry Riddle Prescott’s campus is for students who know their hearts and also for those who want to find their passions. Follow your talents, interests, and dreams to Embry Riddle and you will meet students just like yourself, and together we can all stare up into the sky looking for planes, clouds, stars, UAVs, helicopters, and so much more!!!

Campus Tours

For prospective students many colleges or Universities will offer a Campus tour so that the student may get a feel for the place that they may be living in for the next four years. Here on Embry-Riddle’s Prescott Campus the Admissions office staff and student employees (like me!!) work really hard to be sure that if you choose to tour our beautiful campus, that you have an enjoyable and rewarding experience.

When you first arrive on campus you will meet up with your tour guide in the Welcome center, which is building 41. It is pretty simple to find, just enter campus through the entrance with the electronic signboard and take the second right leaving the roundabout. You will immediately see the Welcome Center.

Once you are inside there may be a small wait and then you will be off on your tour to see the Freshman dorms, Dining hall, Wellness Center, King Engineering, Academic Complex, Laboratories in the AXFAB (Aerospace Experimentation and Fabrication Building), Wind Tunnel Labs, Jet Dragster Lab, Central Campus, Student Facilities, and the Hazy Library. If you are interested in doing Air Force or Army ROTC at Embry-Riddle then you will also be offered the opportunity to meet with representatives of one or both of the detachments on campus.for Aeronautical Science majors a tour of the Prescott campus’s flight line is also offered and can be taken in addition to the campus tour.

After your tour is complete you then have the opportunity to meet with your admissions counselor in order to cover any admissions questions you have about attending the University. Admissions counselors are located inside the Welcome Center as well as the offices of Financial Aid and Student employment so if you would like you may also look into discussing options for aid or employment with these offices after you have met with your counselor.

It may be a long and eventful day but, I can guarantee that this campus with fascinate you and that your visitor’s experience here at Embry Riddle Prescott has the potential to turn into a really fun and rewarding four years in pursuit of one of our unique majors.

Almost The End

To those of you who would like to know what freshman year is like at Embry-Riddle Prescott, all summed up in a couple paragraphs, well today is your lucky day. It is almost the end of my freshmen year so i will be writing about, the best parts of getting through it, a few tips, and a few of my experiences.

If you have been keeping up with my blogs, I have already talked about the big move away from home. No body really talks about that part, but it can be tough. The best part about being away from home though in a new environment is the freedom that comes with it. It can be a good thing and help you or it could hurt you if you don’t treat it with respect. From my experiences as being a freshmen getting adjusted, keeping yourself busy helps you learn to manage your time wisely and keeps you on the right track to success. I have seen great success because if it and tragic failures.

The next big thing that can make a difference your freshmen year, is continuing to do things that you enjoy, keeping you hobbies or developing new ones is a great way to relieve stress from the school work. Yes it does get stressful. There are many clubs at campus, Embry-Riddle makes it easy for students to be involved with the campus. We have clubs that range from, Rock Climbing to Dance and even Martial Arts. If you are in ROTC, you will have plenty of options to get involved, the more you get involved the more friends you will make, it is easy to meet new people especially at Embry-Riddle, most people here staff included are very outgoing and very approachable. In fact one of the great things about the staff here is how approachable they are. some teachers even host events such as taking a group of people down to phoenix to watch a baseball or hockey game. its a great way to get to know the professors and hear some of their great stories or projects they are working on.

The first year is tough but some of the best parts about getting through it are the unexpected. You never know whats coming around the corner but that is the best part. You will meet a lot of great new people that have common interests and degrees. You will have great memories and a lot of laughs, but knowing you finished your freshmen year successfully is a great accomplishment and great way to start your career.

In this blog i went over a good way to deal with your free time, and a great way to keep yourself on the right track to success. I gave you a few personal insights, and a good way to get involved on campus.
