What I did over Spring Break

CAM00587 IMG_01682014-03-13 10.46.202014-03-13 10.09.53

Hey there everyone,  I bet you would like to know what I did for fun this Spring Break. Well, honestly I slept a lot, went shopping, watched a bunch of movies, and…..saw some of the coolest airplanes ever!!! There is a little museum in between Prescott and the Grand Canyon called “Planes of Fame” and boy is it mind blowing!!

A few friends and I just happened to see it on the side of the road and in a split second we made the decision to pull over and check it out. The staff were so friendly, and fun fact, military personnel, Embry Riddle students, and people who fly into the local air port can get in for free. They have a retired Blue Angels Jet, several rare air craft, and an amazing amount of memorabilia.

Another cool fact is that the prototype for one of the Prescott campus’s very own wind tunnels “little blue” is actually housed in the museum!!! I never knew that!! The stuff we saw at the museum was amazing!!! I really encourage you to go ahead and check it out if you are in the area, especially if you will be here for our Preview Day!!!

See ya soon 😉 and have an awesome Wednesday!

Technology Tips

index

In the Admissions office we often get questions about what type of technology is most helpful for students who are coming to college. Well, I have compiled a list and interesting facts/comments below that should be really helpful. Please read on!!

a) Tablets: If you are a flight student an apple ipad is the best. If you are not, a Samsung tablet totally rocks for checking and sending email in between classes. Games of course are handy to have when you get bored too 😉

b) Laptops: Bring a good one. You do not want to have to replace it while in college, trust me, its no beuno I have been there and done that. I prefer Samsung and/or apple but, as long as you bring one you can trust it will all be well.

c) Cell phone: Oddly enough, some people come to college without one. NOT A GOOD IDEA. How else will you call home, keep in touch with friends, and make professional phone calls for internships, payments on loans etc. BRING A CELL PHONE.

Well, those are the three main things that you will need technology wise in college. Of course, TV’s, gaming systems, and things like that are optional but, you won’t use those as often if you are doing the whole college thing right…..just sayin.

Hope you enjoyed reading. Have an awesome day everyone!!!

Daytona Visit

Last week I had the pleasure of traveling to Orlando, FL for the annual Women in Aviation International conference held at Disney World. I had the chance to meet many companies and pilot recruiters. Also, the conference hosted several seminars on different topics in aviation such as how to balance pilot life with family life, need to know information about aviation medicals, and corporate aviation information.

Deborah Hersman from the NTSB gave an amazing speech at the WAI Conference in Orlando.

After the conference ended last weekend, a friend of mine from my hometown in California (who attends ERAU Daytona), picked me up and is allowing me to stay this week with him in Daytona. Since I was already here and it is spring break for the Prescott campus, I figured I would take the week to check out our sister campus and enjoy the Florida weather. It is really cooling staying in the guest room of his house, being that it is located at a small private airport called Spruce Creek, just 20 minutes away from ERAU’s campus in Daytona. This place is unique being that the streets are all taxiways, garages are hangers, and it is more common to see planes than cars. Talk about a cool place to live as a pilot!

Since arriving here, I have to say that I am impressed with their campus here. Having the campus on the airport means no waiting for shuttles, and everything is all in one place. However, I do see how the Prescott campus is so much more of a personal place and really makes you feel at home. The facilities here are much more built up and give you a modern and corporate feel to the campus. Although I am bias and will always prefer Prescott, I do like it here in Daytona, and wouldn’t mind coming back. The weather is nice, the ocean is close, and the area is much more urban than my desert home. I have gotten a lot of attention here with people asking me about how I like flying out in the desert and I must say I think that we have it pretty good in Arizona. The experience we take from flying at high altitude is one that I think is only beneficial.

Update on my Fourth Semester at Riddle

My time here at Embry Riddle has certainly gone fast, it seems like just yesterday that I was a freshman, and now I almost a junior….so weird!!! This semester has gone pretty well so far though, I am still in Field Training Preparation, and that is going well, as are my other gauntlet engineering courses.

For those of our readers who don’t really know what I mean by the “gauntlet” and “Field Training Preparation” it is really just the hardest semester of Air Force ROTC training and Aerospace engineering combined. I am taking fundamental classes of engineering science, chemistry, extra Air Force Training, and a graduate level math course.  As I said though, things are going quite well thanks to the support of professors, and mentors from Air Force.

Helping-MentorThe neat thing about having a tough semester here at Riddle is that the professors and upperclassman are more than willing to help you out with advice, tutoring, etc. That is something that you do not find at many universities across the nation. So when you are narrowing down that list of colleges to go to just remember that 🙂

If you have any specific questions about what exactly I have been up to, please feel free to comment below and I will be happy to answer your questions. That’s all for now folks!! Have a great day!!!

Road Trip??

images

If you are headed out on a road trip for spring break we might be able to help you out with travel tips and suggestions of neat places to visit. On top of the list is of course, Embry Riddle’s Prescott campus 🙂 A close second is the Grand Canyon, the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Phoenix, and Sedona. I have been to three of the above destinations and they are well worth the trip, so if you are in the Prescott area you are within a 2-3 hour drive of each area, I highly suggest taking advantage of it.

The grand canyon is great for hiking, seeing the sights, and learning a little about the nation’s history. The Lowell Observatory is breathtaking!! Pluto was actually discovered in the early 19th century by a scientist who worked at the observatory. The images of space and the technology that is available for visitors to see is incredible. At $20 a head with discounts available for youth, the elderly, military, and students it is well worth the trip.

Just remeber to check your oil, brakes, windshield wipers, coolant, air pressure, etc. before you set out on a trip. We want you to arrive at your destination safely so that we can give you an awesome tour here at Embry Riddle and send you on your way to the other cool places in our area. Have a great Spring Break, and we hope to see you here soon!

Second Set of Midterms!

midterms-440x356

This week midterms start all over again!!!!!!! Its that time of the semester that will either make or break your grade so please study hard!!! I have two midterms this week and in my college experience I find that it is best to start studying at least three days in advance. I always set a goal for the day, for example on day one I gather all my study material and organize it so I can start studying. Each following day I add an extra hour or so to my study time so by the time of the test I know that I am prepared.

Some things that you don’t want to do are cramming, not sleeping, and/ or forgetting about the test. That is not a good recipe for success, so my best advice is to study hard using the method that works best for you!

Good luck on those midterms everyone, and as always we would love to hear your thoughts so feel free to comment below!
